I'd rather...

I'd rather not be tucked into a shroud
in the last gleam of the sun.
Boxed. Sealed.
Lowered to eternity.
I'd rather let my bones turn into pumice,
more readily be dust unto dust.
Better a cliche'
to send my soul on its way.
I'd compel my spirit
to soar as a ghost.
I don't have to be
with the risen just yet.
I will hide in walls,
and as you pass
I'll be the peeling paint
where sometimes you may see
a water mark that looks like me.
Reduced, but present.

Oh Lyn .
This is beautiful, compelling and startling with the inherent truth for me. How well you write
With love and appreciation for who you are here.

Hi Linda-
I so appreciate your comment. When I'm writing, I somehow find out what my truth is.. Thank you...

I suppose at some point these issues have to be addressed. In the West we are not spiritual and we don't cope with death very well.I do admire your attitude and acceptance about ending up as a water mark or peeling paint. So many seem desperate to leave a legacy or a dynasty or leave their mark on the world.I have never understood why it is so terrifying to be forgotten..
For me it's the living that is important..the quality of encounters and life.I could write endlessly about this but I've already said too much. This is a very thought provoking poem and I think you have made some very good points.

Hi Alex-
What can one say...thanks!!

Hi rallentanda-
So interesting! Thank you..I have always had a mind to examine life/spirit/ and being a Westerner has only been a minor stumbling block, tons of silly karma and useless attachments to overcome..I am the least sentimental of souls and being peeling paint is really good enough for me!! But in some deep way, I have to let go of even you probably know, I'm a kidder too!!

It seems unreasonable not to be able to aspire to peeling paint.
I would like to be a sound.B flat would do me.

Hi rall...
A major person in a minor key...hmmm...

Oh, yes... I'm with you, Lyn. The whole coffin thing and the enbalming- what's the point? This has been on my mind a lot lately with 3 deaths just recently. What are we trying to preserve... the empty chrysalis? The chaff? The shed skin? For heaven's sake, why?

Lyn said...

Hi Deedee-
Thank you..absolutely right! If we are spiritual beings, then the whole thing's already taken care of.
Sorry for your loss...

This is raw. You don't want to be forgotten. And who would? What a marvellous poem. I loved it, especially the bit about the cliche. Very well put.

Thanks for your comments on my latest post. All I can say is that then I went and ruined it all by supporting the Yanks and Chelsea (hardly underdogs) :-). Ahhhh... life sweet life!

Greetings from London.
