MAGPIE/ Prompt #70

                                             photo/ Tess Kincaid/  Magpie Tales

Thanks, Tess, for this enigmatic photo..for MAG #70...

GRADUATION

I know why you're buying this.
I know it's not for my virginal looks,
a purity left on the snapshot,
tempered by innocence,
enforced by whispers.

But the photo will go,
soon to be slipped
from under the glass,
removed, and I know
you'll toss it into the trash
and it will land face down
next to the orange peel,
that the cat will sniff
and maybe paw.

I know the treasure
is the fine beadwork
that I stretched around the edge,
red to match my hair.

My day of delight,
youth and splendor
was even then slipping away.

I know,
but $1.99 is still $1.99.

The last two lines are so sad. And the phrase "that the cat will sniff and maybe paw" is wonderful.

I price occasionally at the local thrift shop and I know that feeling of removing pictures to the trash to sell the frame. So sad that these timeless photo's will not be loved forever.

Unique take on this one; I like it!

You've given her a defiant dignity even though her image has been cast about. Really enjoyed your perspective!

So often we find great treasures in the frame themselves rather than in the piece of art.

Oh, very sad to think she knows the frame is worth more than her exquisite face.

You have seen the beadwork and it made me look for it twice. Great writers always see beyond what is obvious and obviously you are a great writer. Your poem is remarkable. The most precious part for somebody could be a trash to another. Here's to finding a hundred of precious things in a day :)
